All of us have experienced brain fog – for some, on a daily basis – struggling to focus our attention on the task at hand, unable to manage a constant stream of distraction. We tend to respond by eating or drinking things that we sense might help—a calorie-dense meal to comfort us, a bit of sugar or caffeine to give us a boost to get over the hump of the afternoon. When there is a fire smoldering in our brains, we’ll try anything to put it out—even if we know it’s not a healthy choice.
In truth, trying to clear your head by eating the wrong foods is like pouring water on a grease fire. Even if the flames move around temporarily, nothing will be truly extinguished, and your problems will only spiral further out of control. Fortunately, the opposite is also true: a brain-healthy diet can lead to mental clarity that is reliable and sustainable by nurturing the same healthy eating patterns that promote a healthy metabolism and immune system.
In This Is Your Brain on Fire, Dr. Uma Naidoo draws on cutting-edge science and her own clinical experience to reveal how a healthy diet can help you achieve a clear mind, with sharp concentration that doesn’t waver until you want it to. A clear mind that is resilient, able to manage the demands of daily life without becoming overly fatigued or burning out—and is also able to relax into periods of healing mental rest. A clear mind that can maintain a stable mood and regulate emotions, warding off threats to mental health like depression and anxiety. And a clear mind that is long-lasting, remaining strong and agile amidst the natural effects of aging on memory and cognitive agility.
Each chapter will highlight a few ‘focus foods’ that target different aspects of mental clarity. Dr. Uma will incorporate these into a full mental clarity eating plan, complete with a 90-day protocol and a selection of recipes for brain-healthy meals.
